Picks of the Week: Hookers N’ Clones

June 15, 2008 at 9:24 pm (Picks of the Week)

Week of June 14th, 2008

I’m a little late this week but it’s worth it because last night I watched a fantastic movie that inspired this weeks theme.

Movie: Frankenhooker

That tagline alone should make you want to see this. While the titular character is not actually revealed until a good two thirds into the movie, the scene leading up to it is worth it alone. Basically this is the story about Jeffrey Franken, whose girlfriend is killed in a freak lawnmower accident. Being the expert medical school dropout he is, he concocts a plan to rebuild his girlfriend using hooker parts. He goes to the hooker pimp (who is named ZORRO) and gets a huge selection of hookers to choose from. We’re then treated to a montage of him examining the various body parts and deciding which ones are the best (including putting a checkmark on one girls ass with a sharpie) before ‘accidentally’ exploding them all with super crack he invented the night before. He builds the girl, crazy shit happens, and the worst part in the movie is when various hooker body parts form a bunch of creepy ass mutant things that crawl at Zorro and kiss him then drag him into a deep freeze. It’s probably one of the scariest things I’d ever seen put to film. But the movie is hilarious.

Television Show: Clone High

This is also a show I wrote about in my Top 25 TV Shows, but expect most if not all of those shows to appear on these picks eventually. Anyway, this show is hilarious and awesome and I use those two words often I know but they are always true so shut up. They have some great guest spots, and the main cast themselves are excellent voice actors (and a lot of them you’d probably recognize the name of or some of the other work they’ve done).  There is also a fantastic episode that is a ‘rock opera in three acts’ and I can’t stress enough how amazing this episode is. The music is pretty damn catchy too.

Music: Rilo Kiley

I have adored every one of these guys albums and their new one was a notable difference in tone and music but I still loved it none the less. I know a lot of big Rilo Kiley fans hated the new album but I still enjoyed it but I would still agree it’s their weakest album so far. But their first three albums are all stellar and top notch. I think that if I had to choose one band and only one band that I had to listen to for the rest of my life I would go with Rilo Kiley, because their music is diverse enough that I wouldn’t grow bored and I could definitely listen to their stuff over and over and over again. Plus Jenny Lewis is quite the pretty lady.

Book: Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

Yes, another Palahniuk book. What can I say, he’s the first author I really got into and his books are still some of my favorites. This was technically the first book of his I finished, and I was really impressed. There is a feature film coming out based on this book starring Sam Rockwell (awesome) which I think will be pretty good. I haven’t really seen the trailer or anything yet so don’t hold me on that, but I have faith. Basically the story is about a sex addict who purposefully chokes on food at restaurants so someone will save him, feel responsible for his well-being, and subsequently send him money to support him. There are other aspects to it as well, but I won’t get into it all as it may ruin it. Check it out, it’s really well executed and an interesting read.

Video Game: Grand Theft Auto IV

I beat the main game a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed. The main character, Niko Bellic, is one of the more likeable characters in a video game I’ve ever played, and while there are a lot of annoying and stupid characters in the game, there is a much better balance of cool/good characters than in earlier games (at least in my mind). Also there are some great executions and choices you have to make which actually affect the way the rest of the game is played, which was pretty interesting to go through. I haven’t done a lot of the side missions and whatnot so I’m not sure how great that aspect is, but the main story is definitely something worth checking out, if only for some of the ending bits.

Next week I hope to have watched some more awesome slash hilarious B movies to rave and rant about.
